    Alliance Bank introduces biodiversity module in AEIOU financial literacy programme

    The introduction of the biodiversity module into Alliance Bank’s AEIOU Financial Literacy Programme to primary school students in Sabah was attended by 128 primary school students from 17 schools across Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Tuaran.

    Carrying the theme ‘AEIOU for Responsible Living: Smarter Finances, Caring for Nature, Greener Choices’, the biodiversity module of the programme was delivered in collaboration with Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Malaysia and supported by the Sabah State Treasury Department (JBNS) and the Ministry of Education.

    The programme, which began on July 5 and ended on July 26, was conducted through practical workshops and interactive simulations that provided students with the opportunity to explore the field of environmentally friendly entrepreneurship, better known as ‘ecopreneurship’.

    The highlight of the programme was the AEIOU Sabah Biodiversity Challenge’ where students aged 9-12 competed fiercely to win the competition. The finalists successfully demonstrated their knowledge while playing the ‘Eco Heroes’ board game, where their creativity, understanding of money management and sustainability awareness were put to the test.

    SK St Catherine from Kota Kinabalu, was crowned the champion of the Biodiversity Challenge and won a cash prize of RM5,000, a trophy, a medal, and a certificate of achievement for presenting an interesting story on the concept of money management and biodiversity preservation through their recycling program of reusing milk boxes.

    SK St Anthony came in second place and took home a cash prize of RM3,000, a trophy, a medal, and a certificate of participation. While SK St Agnes came in third place and took home RM1,000, a trophy, a medal, and a certificate.

    The AEIOU programme, which was launched in 2015, is recognised by the Ministry of Education Malaysia and supported by Bank Negara Malaysia, based on the concept of fostering financial skills among young Malaysians.

    The prize-giving ceremony was officiated by Yang Berhormat Tuan Wong Kah Woh, Deputy Minister of Education, and was attended by nearly 142 students and 38 teachers.

    According to YB Wong, “The overwhelming response from the students and the encouraging number of participation is proof that the message of nature conservation has truly touched their hearts.”

    He added, “I would like to commend Alliance Bank for its continued commitment to fostering biodiversity awareness among the younger generation. As the saying goes, “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree”, it is important for us to provide knowledge and awareness about the importance of preserving biodiversity from a young age so that they can become responsible environmental stewards in the future.”

    Meanwhile, Alliance Bank Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer. Dr. Aaron Sum said, “I am confident that with this kind of programme, students will realise that their daily activities and decisions have an impact on the environment and through this understanding, they will be able to develop a responsible attitude towards the environment.”

    He added, “I am very proud of all the students who participated in the AEIOU Sabah Biodiversity Challenge and hope that what they have learned will be put into practice and shared with other friends and family.”

    The prize giving ceremony was also attended by representatives from Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots Malaysia. Its President, TP Lim conveyed his appreciation and said, “We are pleased to share the success of the recently concluded biodiversity module developed in collaboration with Alliance Bank. This partnership has been instrumental in expanding environmental awareness among schoolchildren and strengthening our commitment to biodiversity conservation.

    Since its launch in 2015, the AEIOU Challenge Programme has reached over 180,000 primary school students through its seven editions. The programme also provides community outreach, ensuring that all children have access to financial education resources. Students can continue their financial learning journey through the AEIOU mobile app, which provides financial education videos and digital comics. The acquisition of these resources supports the key objectives of the Ministry of Education’s 2027 School Curriculum framework, prioritising the importance of lifelong learning.

    SC celebrates investED Leadership second cohort graduation

    The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) today marked a key milestone in its talent development journey with more than 190 graduates completing the second cycle of the investED Leadership Programme.
    Officiated by Director General of Higher Education, Datuk Professor Dr. Azlinda Azman, the initiative continues to gain strong momentum as a key capital market initiative for nurturing skilled, future-ready talent for the industry.

    Announced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim in June 2023, this flagship graduate programme is designed to boost local graduates’ employability across various disciplines.

    It also marks the first-ever collaboration of its kind between the SC, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Higher Education, the capital market industry, and universities—reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s human capital and future workforce.

    In the span of just two years, the investED Leadership programme has trained 368 young graduates through close collaboration with industry and university partners. Of this, 233 graduates have been employed.

    The second cohort of the Leadership programme, which began in August 2024, received 1,200 applications. Following a month of intensive classroom training at the Asia School of Business, selected participants were placed with various capital market firms for six months of on-the-job experience.
    The SC Chairman Dato’ Mohammad Faiz Azmi said that investED is more than just a training programme – it is a bridge between classroom learning and career building.

    “Beyond equipping our young talent with skills, the programme also builds their confidence, drives industry growth, and nurtures a new generation of professionals for Malaysia’s capital market,” he added.
    The SC is now inviting applications for the third cohort of the investED Leadership Programme, now open until 30 June 2025. Apart from a potential career in the capital market industry, trainees also receive a monthly allowance of RM2,400 during the training period.
    Separately, the investED Foundation Programme, delivered by the SC’s learning arm, the Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC), also saw continued progress. Last year, more than 1,000 students enrolled, exceeding the annual target of 800 by 25%.

    In addition, investED has organised 44 career talks and 13 career fairs nationwide, reaching over 110,600 students in the last two years. Of this, 13,500 students have attended the career talks, surpassing the three-year target of 9,000 students in just under two years.

    Hong Leong Islamic Bank distributes 1,000 food packets to foodpanda riders

    In conjunction with the holy month of Ramadhan, Hong Leong Islamic Bank (HLISB/Bank) distributed 1,000 buka puasa meals to foodpanda e-hailing delivery riders in its ‘Senyum-Senyum Ramadhan’ initiative, bringing the festive spirit and putting smiles on the faces of foodpanda riders as they continue to deliver food to Malaysians throughout the month of Ramadhan.

    Through its partnership with foodpanda, the Bank has also sponsored buka puasa meals for over 300 foodpanda riders and their families in Melaka, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan and Perak, spreading warmth, positivity, and appreciation in the community.

    Dafinah Ahmed Hilmi, Chief Executive Officer of HLISB commented on the impactful event, “Ramadhan is a time for gratitude and appreciation, and for many Muslims, it represents an opportunity to give back to the community. This year, we wanted to recognise the sacrifice and dedication of our e-hailing delivery riders, who in many ways are the unsung heroes of our country, especially during festive seasons. During Ramadhan, they brave the heavy traffic and face high volumes of orders, with a majority of them fasting themselves. At HLISB, we wanted to find a way to appreciate their sacrifices, give back to this community, and bring a smile to these riders, which led to us forging our partnership with foodpanda.”

    The Bank’s partnership with foodpanda to sponsor and distribute buka puasa meals to delivery riders is aligned with its Raya theme of “Amal”, where it encourages Malaysians to engage in good deeds which will lead to positive outcomes and multiplied rewards. This concept of “Amal” extends beyond doing good, and also includes inculcating healthy financial habits. The Bank highlights that robust financial habits such as consistent savings, regular investing, and smart protection strategies can set Malaysians up for a brighter financial future.

    HLB and HLISB have a proud tradition of community service during festive seasons, with the Bank organizing Employee Donation Drives where employees donate meal kits and essential goods to welfare homes across the country. Since its inception in 2019, the Bank’s employees have donated more than RM100,000 worth of food, goods, and household items to welfare homes. Employees also regularly engage in spring cleaning initiatives at welfare homes, ensuring that these underserved communities receive the help and support they need.

    In conjunction with the Raya season and to highlight its “Amal” theme, the Bank recently unveiled its Raya campaign with brand ambassador Alif Satar, which features a Raya song and music video titled ‘Senyum-Senyum Raya’, presented by Alif Satar & The Locos. Besides bringing about a positive Raya spirit, the song also emphasises on the importance of good deeds that can multiply and be the reason for your smile this Raya season.

    BERNAS’ Gema Ramadhan programme reaches out to the urban poor

    Padiberas Nasional Berhad’s (BERNAS) annual Gema Ramadan initiative this year focused on supporting the urban poor as the company contributed food boxes comprises of basic necessities including rice and sugar, as well as “bubur lambuk” to over 1,000 resident especially single mothers, orphans and asnaf families at the People’s Housing Project (“PPR”) Hiliran Ampang.

    The ceremony was graced by Titiwangsa Members of the Parliament and Minister of Plantation and Commodities YB Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, Chairman of BERNAS Dato Sri Rohani Abdul Karim, Group Chief Executive Officer of BERNAS Zulkiflee Abdul Rahman, alongside the senior management team of BERNAS.

    Guests to the event also visited selected homes before the iftar session with orphans, senior citizens and single mothers organised by BERNAS at Surau Al-Falah, PPR Hiliran Ampang.

    “This strategic partnership with corporate entities like BERNAS reflects the strong commitment of private companies in empowering local communities without neglecting those in need, especially during Ramadan” said Datuk Seri Johari.

    “Improving the community’s standard of living has always been a priority for BERNAS. We not only provide support to low-income families but also to the urban poor who fall under the B40 category,” said Dato Sri Rohani.

    According to a 2024 UNICEF Malaysia report, 41% of urban households now live below the poverty line, with women, particularly single mothers, being the most affected in 16 PPR locations.

    Recognising the unique challenges faced by single mothers, orphans, and senior citizens, we developed a support programme to facilitate preparations for Ramadan and Aidilfitri, ensuring that a more joyful and meaningful celebration for every member of the community,” added Dato Sri Rohani.

    BERNAS’ commitment to community development is not limited to the Gema Ramadan Programme but also encompasses initiatives such as the Program Makanan Kesihatan (Healthy Food Programme) known as PROMAK, launched in January 2022.

    PROMAK is a free lunch programme for primary school students throughout the academic calendar has benefited over 20,000 students in 97 schools across five states comprising Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, Terengganu, and most recently, Pahang.

    In addition, BERNAS recently allocated an additional RM30 million to support the government’s efforts to assist impoverished rice farmers. Previously, BERNAS had distributed RM60 million to impoverished rice farmers nationwide. This action aligns with BERNAS’ ongoing commitment to fulfilling its social responsibilities under the Concession Agreement with the Malaysian Government, which includes safeguarding the welfare of the farming community.

    Liberty General Insurance (Liberty) has contributed over RM50,000 from its zakat wakalah funds to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). This contribution is aimed at supporting healthcare initiatives for underserved communities in Malaysia, particularly in making dialysis treatments more affordable and accessible for lower-income patients.

    The funds will assist NKF in acquiring essential medical equipment, including a far infrared therapy machine and a wireless handheld ultrasound imaging system, which are vital tools for enhancing patient care.

    With the rise of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Malaysia, where over five million individuals are affected and yet only 5% are aware of their condition, this contribution seeks to help ease a significant healthcare challenge. The Ministry of Health estimated that over 106,000 individuals will require dialysis by 2040 if the current trends continue. Through this support, Liberty hopes to assist NKF in its efforts to reach vulnerable communities and promote early detection and timely intervention.

    As a one-stop national resource centre for all kidney-related matters, NKF plays a vital role in addressing healthcare disparities by providing affordable treatment options for the lower-income patients who cannot afford the high costs of dialysis at private facilities. Many beneficiaries face significant financial hardships, making access to quality medical care a critical lifeline.     RHB #JOMBIZ empowers over 700 micro-entrepreneurs

    RHB Banking Group (“RHB” or the “Group”) celebrates the continued success of its #JomBiz programme, a socio-economic empowerment initiative aimed at empowering B40 micro-entrepreneurs. Since its launch in 2022, the programme has invested over RM1.1 million, benefitting more than 700 micro-entrepreneurs and delivering an impressive 35% average sales growth within just three months.

    The 2025 RHB #JomBiz Award Ceremony celebrated these remarkable achievements of selected micro- entrepreneurs from RHB Jom#Biz, showcasing the programme’s critical role in providing funding, capacity building, and mentorship to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from the B40 group and underserved communities. The ceremony recognised the recipients of business incentive funding from Cohort 5 of the #JomBiz programme. Participants undergo capacity-building classes on topics such as social media marketing, sustainable business practices, and financial management. Following these sessions, they present their business plans to a panel of judges, with the top 10 proposals receiving initial funding ranging from RM5,000 to RM15,000 to support their business growth.

Notably, four #JomBiz participants were recognised at The Star Outstanding Business Awards (SOBA) 2023.

    The top 3 winners of Cohort 5’s business incentive funding are:

    • 1st Place Puan Nurul Farhana Binti Amirul Hizan, Hanawarrah Creation Enterprise (healthy dried snack food products) – awarded RM15,000
    • 2nd Place Encik Mohd Shafiq Ezwanie Bin Jafri, Senju Co (pastry and bakery business) – awarded RM12,000
    • 3rd Place Puan Nur Shawani Binti Che Mansur, Wisymadani Resources (agro-tourism and agro-based industry business) – awarded RM10,000

    FWD Insurance Berhad (“FWD Insurance”) partners with Arus Academy to empower university students through the Fun(d) for Life – University Edition (FFL Uni) programme. This initiative aims to equip 500 local university students with essential financial skills through a 3-month curriculum that includes training, coaching, and community service.

    “At FWD Insurance, financial literacy is something very dear to our hearts, recognising it as a fundamental skill everyone should have. Through this programme, we go beyond education by offering a holistic approach that not only equips young people with the skills to manage their finance, but also provides them with the resources to put their learning into practice,” said Mak See Sen, Chief Executive Officer of FWD Insurance. “By investing in their growth, we empower individuals and cultivate a financially literate society, driving Malaysia’s economic progress.”

    “The Fun(d) for Life – University Edition programme equips university students with the financial skills and autonomy to make informed decisions about their futures,” said Alina Amir, CEO and Co-Founder of Arus Academy. “University students are at a pivotal stage of their lives, where building strong financial habits can significantly shape their future careers and personal goals.”

    The 3-month FFL Uni programme begins with a 3-day immersive bootcamp focused on setting financial goals, budgeting, and creating comprehensive financial plans, including savings, protection, and investments. Over the course of the programme, students will receive ongoing coaching and mentoring, alongside tools to track expenses, reflect on their financial habits, and develop actionable financial plans. Participants will also document their journey through weekly diaries to raise awareness about financial literacy.

    A significant component of the initiative includes eight hours of community service, where participants teach financial literacy to at least 20 peers. By the programme’s end, each participant will receive a meaningful RM3,000 grant, deposited into their savings accounts or as fixed deposits, to support their financial goals and foster long-term independence. With an anticipated reach of over 10,000 beneficiaries through direct engagement and community service, the initiative reinforces Malaysia’s vision of fostering a financially literate, resilient, and economically inclusive society.

    Aligned with FWD Insurance’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals to uplift communities, the program seamlessly blends Arus Academy’s innovative teaching methods with FWD Insurance’s dedication to financial inclusion, working hand-in-hand towards a common goal of nurturing a financially savvy generation. By reaching tertiary students, FFL Uni is broadening its impact on youth of all ages, promoting a more inclusive and sustainable future nationwide. Previously, a collaboration between Arus Academy and FWD Takaful Berhad benefited over 47,108 primary and secondary school students from January to December 2024 through comprehensive financial education initiatives, featuring interactive learning portals, financial literacy camps, and design-focused events in 2024.
