  • ESG Evolution: COP27 to Carbon Stocks Insights

In an era defined by mounting environmental concerns, social responsibility, and ethical governance, the rise of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles has been nothing short of transformative. As the world grapples with the urgent need to address climate change and promote sustainable practices, ESG has emerged as a critical framework guiding both businesses and governments towards a greener and more equitable future.

THE GENESIS OF ESG: PAVING THE PATH TO COP27
The inception of ESG can be traced back to the mounting awareness about the consequences of unchecked environmental degradation and social inequality. ESG’s roots lie in the early sustainability movements that championed the need for responsible business practices, community engagement, and ethical corporate governance. At COP27, the trajectory reached a significant milestone, where nations congregated to address the accelerating climate crisis. COP27 heralded a renewed commitment to curbing greenhouse gas emissions, with a growing emphasis on collaborative global eff orts. This conference placed ESG’s relevance on the international stage, with environmental stewardship, social equity, and transparent governance at the forefront of policy discussions.

    ESG INTEGRATION IN MALAYSIAN BUSINESSES
ESG’s imprint extends far beyond policy considerations, effectively permeating and reshaping the
entire business landscape in Malaysia. Companies of all scales, ranging from industry giants to small enterprises, have astutely recognised that embracing and integrating ESG practices goes beyond aligning with global imperatives—it becomes a strategic decision that significantly influences
brand reputation, financial performance, and long-term sustainability.

In a study conducted by the Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation, it was revealed that businesses that prioritise ESG principles tend to outperform their peers in terms of financial performance. Notably, companies that demonstrated robust environmental and social practices experienced an average of 25% higher return on equity (ROE) compared to their counterparts who did not prioritise ESG considerations.

Furthermore, a survey conducted by the Malaysia Business Ethics Institute (MBEI) disclosed that over 80% of consumers in Malaysia consider a company’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility when making purchasing decisions. This consumer sentiment highlights the pivotal role ESG plays in shaping brand perception and influencing consumer choices.

Large corporations in Malaysia, such as Petronas, have proactively integrated ESG into their business strategies. Petronas’ initiatives to reduce carbon emissions through energy-efficient practices not only contribute to environmental goals but have also resulted in significant cost savings. The company’s investments in renewable energy and sustainable technology have not only earned it recognition as a responsible corporate citizen but have also attracted eco-conscious investors.

In the realm of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), a survey by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA) unveiled that over 70% of SMEs are actively seeking to enhance energy efficiency and adopt cleaner technologies. These efforts not only reduce the carbon footprint but also position SMEs as forward-thinking entities aligned with global sustainability trends.

The Malaysian government’s efforts to incentivise ESG practices have also bolstered the integration of these principles. The introduction of tax incentives and grants for businesses engaged in eco-friendly
initiatives has garnered increased interest and engagement from the corporate sector. This intersection of government support and business initiative demonstrates the growing recognition of ESG’s impact on
    long-term profitability.

In essence, ESG integration in Malaysia transcends being a superficial trend, resonating deeply with both consumer preferences and financial realities. The data and statistics outlined above indicate that companies embracing ESG practices are not only meeting global ethical standards but are also carving a competitive edge in the market. As businesses continue to navigate an ever-evolving landscape, the significance of ESG in enhancing brand reputation, financial performance, and overall sustainability becomes irrefutable.

MALAYSIA’S ESG JOURNEY: A PARADIGM SHIFT FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Malaysia’s stride towards COP27 was marked by a series of proactive measures to align its policies and industries with ESG principles. A notable endeavour was the launch of the Bursa Carbon Exchange (BCX), Malaysia’s voluntary carbon market exchange. BCX not only embodies the nation’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 but also symbolises Malaysia’s emergence as a key player in the global carbon credit ecosystem.

According to Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Chairman of Bursa Malaysia Berhad, “The launch of Bursa Carbon Exchange is momentous as it will play a significant role in supporting the nation’s, and indeed the world’s, voluntary carbon market ecosystem.” This initiative positions Malaysia at the forefront of sustainable finance, marrying its role as a global Islamic financial marketplace with innovative carbon credit offerings.

INVESTING IN CARBON STOCKS: NAVIGATING PROFITABLE SUSTAINABILITY
Investing in carbon stocks has emerged as a compelling avenue for both environmentally conscious investors and those seeking lucrative opportunities. As the global drive towards sustainability gains momentum, carbon stocks present a unique convergence of responsible investing and financial growth. These stocks offer investors the chance to not only contribute to carbon reduction initiatives but also to reap potential financial rewards. Below, we delve into the top-performing carbon stocks of 2023 that exemplify the blend of sustainability and profitability.

Analysts from institutions like TD, Bank of Nova Scotia, BMO, and H.C. Wainwright have endorsed Carbon Streaming’s potential, with an average price target of around US$4.50. Carbon Streaming’s strategic approach highlights its role as a leveraged play on the increasing demand and value of carbon credits within the voluntary carbon market.

    2. DevvStream (DESG.NEO)

The company’s robust balance sheet, strong cash position, and strategic partnerships position it favourably for the projected growth in the voluntary carbon market.

Brookfield Renewable Partners stands out as a global leader in renewable energy and decarbonisation technologies. With an exclusive focus on clean energy, BEP’s portfolio comprises hydroelectric plants, wind farms, solar power plants, and other sustainable energy solutions. Their development pipeline, targeting a 46% increase in power capacity over three years, showcases their dedication to renewable expansion. With a strong dividend yield, consistent growth in distributions, and an emphasis on clean energy, BEP aligns seamlessly with the growing trend toward responsible investing.

CARBON STOCKS ARE PAVING THE WAY TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
As more and more public companies declare their net-zero ambitions and disclose their carbon emissions, responsible investing is becoming a hot topic in financial markets. Big money is pouring into renewable energy and offsetting emissions using carbon credits. Meta, Apple, and Netflix are among the tech giants leading the charge towards net-zero targets by 2030. Meanwhile, major mining companies
like Barrick and Newmont, as well as energy giants like Saudi Aramco, Exxon, and Shell, are also making similar commitments.

These developments will likely increase investor interest in all things carbon-related in 2023 and beyond. And as 2030 draw closer, we can expect this trend to accelerate even further. Carbon stocks could prove a valuable addition to an investor’s portfolio as the world heads towards net-zero targets.

ANTICIPATING COP28 AND BEYOND: A SUSTAINABLE TRAJECTORY
As COP28 approaches, the world is poised to build upon the achievements of COP27. The momentum created by ESG initiatives, including the rise of carbon stocks, will likely shape discussions and actions at COP28. The success of these endeavours hinges on the concerted efforts of governments, businesses, and individuals to embrace ESG as an integral part of their strategies.

The evolution of ESG from a concept to a driving force shaping sustainability and responsible governance is painting a promising picture of a world that acknowledges its responsibilities. With that, it is also taking proactive steps towards a greener, more equitable future.

  • You Too Can Excel

For a book title, it may sound too common.  However, this is one book that is everything except common.    I have written this book for a top civil servant who has over 35 years of experience where he shares his experiences through stories, insights, and hindsight for those aspiring young leaders who too want to reach the top positions in organizations.

As the book appears to have two names, allow me to differentiate between an author and a writer.  A writer is the one who helps write the book, but the author is the one with the stories and the sharing of his views.  The writer plays the role of interviewing to unleash what is inside the author and help write the book.  Of course, there are authors who write their own books too.  However, many people have books trapped inside them but do not translate their gems to be shared with the world.

One such individual, Datuk Ir. Amrullah has unleashed his trapped book into reality with his first book, You Too Can Excel.  The book is written more in a style of self-improvement rather than a biography. This book is divided into 10 Chapters.

Chapter 1 gives a good background of Datuk Amrullah Kamal describing the events that had shaped him. His years of martial arts training through Taekwondo, Judo, and Silat classes have developed a sense of confidence and discipline that serves him well. His scouting activities developed his leadership, and survival skills as well as inculcated in him a sense of independence. His parents’ spiritual teachings have inculcated good moral principles and humility in him. His resilience and courage in his younger days certainly helped him in his later years.

Launching the English and the Bahasa version of the book at the same time

Before introducing Chapter 2, there is a brief introduction on what are the 7 Majestic Step-Ups. The term, Step-Up means to do something faster and better with greater intensity to achieve the desired results.

The 7 Majestic Step-Ups approach are as follows:

Chapter 2: Majestic Step-Up 1: Engage foresight to develop a vision

Chapter 3: Majestic Step-Up 2: Have the guts to do what is right

Chapter 4: Majestic Step-Up 3: Develop superb communication skills

Chapter 5: Majestic Step-Up 4: Be hungry for success and performance-driven

Chapter 6” Majestic Step-Up 5: Execute well with massive action

Chapter 7: Majestic Step-Up 6: Follow through till successful

Chapter 8: Majestic Step-Up 7: Build a powerful and motivated team

Chapter 2 to Chapter 8 covers the 7 Majestic Step-Ups providing specific examples of how Datuk Amrullah had used them to excel.  He rose from the rank of an executive engineer to the Director of JKR Sabah and then the Director-General Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, and finally the President of  Majlis Perbandaran Tawau, through using this approach to help achieve extraordinary results often with seemingly impossible tasks.

In many of his works, he had tapped into his foresight to develop an inspiring vision to win over people’s commitment. He had the guts to do what was right rather than what was popular. He had used his superb persuasive skill to influence his superiors to approve something that had never been approved before. For example, he managed to get a huge budget for the development of rural roads in Sabah approved as well as for 45 fresh engineers despite the staff intake freeze policy.

In everything, one can sense that this man has a hunger for success and is performance-driven. He not only executed well with massive action, but his follow-through was relentless. To him, there is no such thing as failure unless one gives up trying. He did whatever it took, often outside his decision-making powers, using his influential skills to get a difficult idea approved and implemented. He was quick to admit that he did not chalk up all the great achievements by himself.  He had leveraged the motivated team that he had developed.

The author with his eager fans awaiting him to autograph the book.

Perhaps his courage, tenacity, and perseverance could be best attested by his attending Tony Robbins fire-walking seminar 3 times and having climbed Mount Kinabalu to reach the summit when he was 51 years old.

Chapter 9 is an emotional chapter where he shares his greatest loss. It is heart-rendering to read about the loss of his father and yet inspiring to know of the great love of his family that motivated him to overcome the adversities he faced. The lessons of adversities are indeed useful gems, especially for the younger ones who have yet to face a great crisis in their lives.

In the final chapter, Datuk Amrullah shows us behind the tough and disciplined leader is a man who has a soft spot for orphans. His involvement in community and charity work while working full-time in organizations shows his love and care for helping others.

His definition of his purpose in life is indeed most magnanimous and selfless:

“The purpose of my life is to serve others and make a difference in their lives. In the process of helping others, I will improve myself, become a better and happier person as well as achieve a sense of fulfillment in my life”.

His active role in securing a  wakaf land and the building, Rumah Anak Ar-Raudhoh speaks volumes of a man whose kindness has made a difference in the lives of the orphans.

In this book, Datuk Amrullah generously shares his insight, experiences, and strategies to help those working in the public as well as the private sector to excel in whatever they do through the 7 Majestic Step-Ups.

You too can excel if you apply this approach in your work, whichever field you are in be it in manufacturing or retail business.

He continued, “As we introduce the Fund Funnel program, Malaysia embarks on a transformative journey to fulfil the aspirations outlined in the Malaysia Startup Ecosystem Roadmap. The Fund Funnel program signifies the government’s commitment to nurturing startups by providing them with vital funding access at every stage of their journey, in line with Malaysia MADANI’s aspiration to build an innovative and high-tech nation.”

Bursa Malaysia will analyse the data shared by Cradle and collaborate with them to organize programs that focus on funding access. Additionally, Bursa Malaysia will support Cradle in knowledge sharing and help startups gain a better understanding of how the equity market can contribute to their growth. This objective is crucial to assist businesses in planning their future growth and identifying the necessary funding to support their journey from the early stages to eventually becoming a publicly listed company.

Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Chairman of Bursa Malaysia, stated, “This collaboration reflects the Exchange’s intent to assist Cradle in building a thriving startup ecosystem by addressing a common pain point faced by local startups, namely, access to funding opportunities. Together with Cradle, we are committed to alleviating this challenge and facilitating Malaysia startups in their funding journey with the goal of accelerating their growth and enabling them to list right here within their home country.”

He concluded, “We firmly believe that the outcome of this collaboration will yield a positive impact, benefiting startups, our capital market, and the broader Malaysian economy.”

Seeing the children’s smiles as they enjoy their meals is the most rewarding aspect of this program. We are delighted that the food aid program has received a positive and overwhelming response and hope it will continue to benefit the Asnaf students,” Zainal concluded.

  • The Ideal Sanctuary – A Stone’s Throw Away from the City

When it comes to finding a getaway destination for a break, many people seem to think that the further we travel from home, the more exciting and exotic it becomes. The grass often appears greener on the other side. I used to hold the same belief until my recent staycation at a resort hotel that is just a stone’s throw away from the city.

In this article, my focus is on assisting busy executives who lack the time to search for an ideal staycation. Getaways that necessitate extensive planning, arrangements, and travel can add stress, defeating the purpose of a break meant for relaxation. The good news is that I’d like to recommend an ideal, relaxing, and refreshing sanctuary for these hectic executives, located within a short distance from the city – a 25-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur and 15 minutes from Petaling Jaya.

During the past week, my family and I checked into the exquisite Sunway Resort Hotel, which had undergone a thorough refurbishment, boasting an elegant modern appearance. I understand that the Management invested about US$60 million to give the hotel a contemporary facelift and equip it with the latest technology.

From the instant we stepped into the grand lobby of Sunway Resort Hotel, it was apparent that we were in for a special treat. The personal and courteous welcome instantly put us at ease, as the attentive staff showered us with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. It was clear that this place was more than just a hotel – it was a haven of comfort and joy.

As we made our way to our room on the 5th floor, we couldn’t help but admire the stunning interior design that seamlessly combined elegance and modernity. The impeccable attention to detail and the hotel’s commitment to sustainability truly impressed me. Sunway Resort Hotel had embraced green practices without compromising on luxury, incorporating everything from energy-efficient lighting to eco-friendly toiletries.

Our Family Fun Suite was an oasis of tranquillity, exuding a sense of calm and sophistication. With 2 queen beds accommodating 2 adults and 2 children, the room was fully equipped with smart curtains, an entertainment zone complete with karaoke and gaming consoles, and a big screen entertainment area stocked with complimentary fresh fruits, healthy snacks, sweets, juices, beverages, and mineral water. We chose this specialty family suite for its promise of tailor-made comfort suited to our needs. Whether you’re a business traveller in search of a productive environment or a family on vacation looking for ample bonding space, the hotel is well-equipped to meet your needs.

As I entered the room, the plush beds with numerous pillows seemed to beckon me, and I couldn’t resist sinking into their soft embrace for a power nap to reenergize. Lying there, I felt the concerns of the outside world melt away, replaced by a sense of serenity and contentment. The panoramic view of the waterpark with its splashing waterfall outside my window was breathtaking, reminding me of the adventures awaiting me in this vibrant destination.

One of the standout features of Sunway Resort Hotel was its dedication to providing a family-friendly environment. Eager to explore the Family Zones, I found myself drawn to the Sunway Lagoon Water Park like a magnet. This water wonderland was a haven of fun and laughter, offering exciting water activities and a lively playground. I succumbed to the allure of the water slides and indulged my inner child, resulting in a ‘splash-tastic’ experience that left me with unforgettable memories.

For families with young ones, the Wonderland Explorers Kids Club was a treasure trove of joy. With an extensive array of games and activities, the little adventurers were kept thoroughly entertained, affording parents some well-deserved relaxation time. The hotel went the extra mile to ensure families had a wonderful time together, creating beautiful memories to cherish.

The following morning, I was eagerly anticipating the hotel’s breakfast spread at the Sunset Terrace on Level 1. Stepping into the vibrant and spacious dining area, the enticing aroma of freshly prepared dishes enveloped the air. The buffet was a gastronomic paradise, boasting an impressive selection of local Malaysian delicacies and international favourites. I savoured each bite, exploring new flavours and delighting in the culinary wonders that awaited me.

Dining at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill, the flagship restaurant of the multi-Michelin starred chef in Malaysia, was undoubtedly a highlight of my stay. As a food enthusiast and a Gordon Ramsay fan, I held high expectations, which were not only met but exceeded in every aspect.

Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by an elegant and inviting ambiance. While perusing the menu, it was evident that we were in for a culinary adventure of a lifetime. The options were plenty, and after much consideration, we ordered a variety of starters including Arnold Bennett Twice-baked Soufflé, Chicken & Duck Liver Parfait, Aged Beef Tartare, Seared Scallops, and Transmontanus Caviar. For the main course, we opted for a whole Boston Lobster Thermidor, Classic Beef Wellington, Wagyu Rib Eye, and A5 Japanese IGA Sirloin. The Apple Tarte Tatin was our choice for dessert.

Each dish that arrived at our table was a masterpiece, meticulously crafted with a burst of flavours that danced on our taste buds. From perfectly seared steaks to delectable seafood creations, every bite was a symphony of taste that left us in awe of Chef Ramsay’s culinary brilliance.

Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant also attracted notable individuals from afar. Seated across from us was Professor Muhammad Yunus, the renowned founder of Grameen Bank and a Nobel Peace Prize Winner. He had come with his family to dine at the restaurant and was staying at the hotel as he was scheduled to deliver a talk on Entrepreneurship For A Better World at Sunway University, conveniently located across from the hotel.

The service at Gordon Ramsay was exceptional, with attentive staff ensuring that every aspect of our dining experience was flawless. They shared insights into the dishes and made recommendations, helping us make the right choices.

The next day, I decided to indulge by the poolside just outside Sunset Terrace. Lounging by the sparkling pool, sipping refreshing drinks, and savouring delectable bites made for a perfect unwinding experience. The atmosphere was ideal for relaxation, and as I sat basking in the sun by the pool, the hypnotic sound of the waterfall provided a constant soothing backdrop.

One of the standout aspects of my stay at Sunway Resort Hotel was its strategic location. The hotel was interconnected with the Sunway Pyramid shopping mall and Sunway Lagoon theme park, offering unparalleled convenience for any quick purchases. This seamless connectivity allowed me to immerse myself in entertainment and excitement without leaving the hotel premises.

Sunway Resort Hotel wasn’t just about leisure and fun; it was also a hub for events and gatherings. Exploring the hotel’s extensive meeting and events facilities, I was impressed by the world-class spaces and state-of-the-art technology available to guests. These versatile spaces catered to a wide range of events, from international conferences and exhibitions at the convention center to intimate meetings in fully equipped meeting rooms.

Watching the hotel staff expertly organize events with precision and care showcased their dedication to creating exceptional experiences. Whether it was a brainstorming session or a corporate dinner at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill, they had the expertise and commitment to make each event memorable and successful.

Throughout our stay, the exceptional service provided by the hotel staff stood out. Their warm and friendly demeanour made us feel more than just guests; it felt like we were part of a big, happy family. From the front desk to the housekeeping team, everyone went above and beyond to ensure our stay was comfortable and enjoyable.

As our time at Sunway Resort Hotel came to an end, I found it difficult to leave the cocoon of comfort and tranquillity. It had offered more than just accommodation; it had provided a rejuvenating and revitalizing experience. I was charged up and ready to return to work with renewed energy and motivation. Sunway Resort Hotel was a place where luxury and warmth seamlessly blended, where joy and laughter resonated in every corner, and where cherished memories were etched in our hearts.

If you’re searching for an exceptional sanctuary to unwind, relax, and recharge, just a stone’s throw away from the city, I wholeheartedly recommend Sunway Resort Hotel. In my view, this hotel undoubtedly earns a 5-star rating.
