  • Takaful Malaysia’s Di Hatiku Student Food Aid Program Nourishes 1,000 Asnaf Students with Nutritious Meals

Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Keluarga Berhad (“Takaful Malaysia”), the FIRST takaful operator in Malaysia, recently lunhed a Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (“MoE”). This initiative, known as the “Di Hatiku Student Food Aid Program”, aims to provide daily nutritious meals to 1,000 Asnaf students in ten (10) primary schools around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The CSR program aligns with Takaful Malaysia’s sustainability agenda, focusing on nation-building and improving the health, physical condition, and nutrition of underprivileged students.

Nor Azman Zainal, Group Chief Executive Officer of Takaful Malaysia, stated, “We initiated the food aid program to fulfil our responsibility as an Islamic financial institution in distributing Zakat to eligible Asnaf (tithe) recipients. We aim to create sustainable value in the local community by providing daily nutritious meals and improving the nutrition intake of underprivileged students. Our responsibility and commitment are to assist the Government in addressing malnutrition by empowering these children with healthy meals. This is also in line with the spirit of takaful, which emphasizes helping one another, especially those in need.”

Takaful Malaysia’s Di Hatiku Student Food Aid Program was launched in July 2023. Through this program, Takaful Malaysia supplies daily set meals to eligible Asnaf students from low-income families at their respective schools. The program is scheduled to run until February 2024, covering the school academic year 2023/2024.

“Our goal is to play our part and be responsible corporate citizens by providing nutritious food to empower the younger generation. Recognizing the importance of Asnaf students from low-income families having access to balanced meals at school, we decided to initiate this effort and extend a helping hand. Consequently, we are collaborating closely with the MoE, selected school administrators, and canteen operators to manage and implement the food aid program effectively,” said Zainal.

Each selected Asnaf student receives a complete lunchbox set, and the daily menu is based on the food pyramid for children, including vegetables, fruits, and protein sources to meet the needs of the Asnaf students. Additionally, water bottles are also provided to encourage students to stay hydrated.

“The Di Hatiku Student Food Aid Program aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to eradicate malnutrition and ensure regular access to nutritious and sufficient food, particularly for Asnaf and underprivileged children, to support their normal growth and development and promoting a healthy life. Seeing the children’s smiles as they enjoy their meals is the most rewarding aspect of this program. We are delighted that the food aid program has received a positive and overwhelming response and hope it will continue to benefit the Asnaf students,” Zainal concluded.

  • FPAM’s Signature Symposium 2023 Ignites Financial Planning Excellence and Collaboration for a Prosperous Tomorrow

In a resounding commitment to enhancing the financial well-being of the public, the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM) once again orchestrated a powerful event that brought industry experts, financial planners, and enthusiasts together under one roof to share knowledge and expertise. The annual flagship event, the FPAM Annual Signature Financial Symposium 2023, combined knowledge-sharing, strategic insights, and a dynamic platform for networking.

The event was distinguished by the esteemed presence of Datuk Seri Dr Awang Adek Hussin, Chairman of the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). His attendance underscored the pivotal role that regulatory bodies like the SC play in shaping the financial landscape, ensuring its integrity, and safeguarding the interests of investors and consumers alike.

Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang Adek Hussin, Chairman Securities Commission Malaysia

“In recent years, the financial planning industry has undergone a remarkable expansion, assuming an increasingly central role in bolstering the financial well-being of numerous Malaysians,” affirmed Datuk Seri Dr Awang Adek. “Between 2015 and 2022, the number of financial planning firms experienced a robust 42% surge, ascending from 31 to 44 firms by the close of 2022. Concurrently, the count of licensed representatives witnessed a remarkable 145% upswing during the same period, culminating at 1,455 as of the end of 2022.”

According to Jawahar Ali Ameer Ali, the General Manager overseeing consumer and investor affairs at The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) during his session entitled “Scams & Client Protection”, SC has witnessed a sharp surge in reports and inquiries regarding illicit operations and fraudulent activities since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

In 2020, the commission received 1,799 complaints. This number escalated to 3,475 complaints in 2021, followed by 2,461 complaints in 2022. As of the first half of the current year (1H 2023), the tally of complaints stands at approximately 1,670—roughly 60% of the total complaints recorded in 2022.

Mr. Jawahar Ali Ameer Ali, General Manager, Consumer & Investor Office of Securities Commission Malaysia.

Jawahar Ali highlighted the predominant nature of the grievances. Many of these complaints were linked to illicit schemes propagated through social media channels, where these scams’ perpetrators often exploit sponsored advertisements on platforms like Facebook, craft counterfeit websites, and establish public Telegram groups to promote fraudulent investment packages. These offerings are frequently accompanied by fabricated testimonials and certificates falsely attributed to reputable institutions.

He further underscored the fraudulent nature of such social media-based investment schemes, urging investors to exercise caution if prompted to deposit funds into personal bank accounts. He noted that significant losses, amounting to tens of millions, have been incurred by investors falling prey to these scams, highlighting that most of these scams were most rampant after the Movement Control Order (MCO) that hindered movement amongst the public due to Covid-19.

“Never transfer money (for investment) to an individual account. If you are asked to transfer money to a personal bank account or to a bogus company bank account, these are normally mule accounts and you are probably being scammed”, he cautioned the audience.

To counteract this alarming trend, Jawahar Ali outlined the various measures and initiatives the SC has undertaken to alert the public. In the first half of 2023 alone, the commission executed two enforcement actions, issued 170 alerts, blocked 95 websites, disabled six Instagram accounts, suspended 74 Telegram accounts, and intervened in 58 cases involving Facebook.

Mr. Alvin Tan Chin Cherng, President of Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM)

Meanwhile, Alvin Tan Chin Cherng, President of FPAM, highlighted the essential role of the symposium titled “Financial Planning Evolution”, during his opening address. He regarded the event as a pivotal platform for industry professionals to navigate the intricate landscape of today’s financial world, immersing in an extensive spectrum of financial topics, including combating scams and safeguarding clients, adapting to digitalization and risk management, exploring digital assets, promoting sustainability, and comprehending the emerging global order.

“To encourage clients to seek the guidance of financial planners, FPAM is advocating for the inclusion of a tax relief of RM1,000 for financial planning fees in the 2024 budget,” Tan added.

Additional speakers at the event included Mr. Donald Soo, Group CEO & Founder of KoiZai, Mr. Liew Ooi Han, CEO of Halogen Capital Sdn Bhd, and Mr. Stephen Yong, CFP, Director of Wealth Vantage Advisory and Founder of My.PF.my.

A key highlight of the event was the Panel Session titled ‘The Emerging New World Order,’ moderated by Mohd Sedek Jantan – Head of Wealth Research & Advisory at UOB Kay Hian Securities (M) Sdn Bhd. • Industry Leaders and SC Collaborate to Drive New Capital Market Initiatives, Anchored in Prime Minister’s Ekonomi MADANI Announcements

The recent launch of “Ekonomi MADANI” by Prime Minister and Finance Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 27, 2023, spurred the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) to convene its annual industry dialogue, focusing on pivotal areas for capital market advancement and growth.

The Annual SC Industry Dialogue 2023 (SCID 2023) brought together 60 influential figures from the capital market sector, including industry leaders and senior representatives. The discussions encompassed a wide spectrum of subjects falling under three major categories: investment opportunities, funding inclusivity, and market reforms within the capital market.

Key topics of deliberation included fortifying promotional efforts for the capital market, fostering a robust domestic issuer pipeline, enhancing market vitality, broadening the investor base, and harnessing the potential of sustainability and Malaysia’s leadership in the Islamic Capital Market.

Participants in the industry also conveyed their appreciation for the recent slew of capital market measures unveiled by the Prime Minister, alongside those announced in February and June of the same year. Notably, some measures have already been implemented, such as the reduction in stamp duty for share trading and secondary trading in the private market.

Anticipation was palpable within the industry for the forthcoming initiatives. Among them, the expansion of the definition of sophisticated investors was highlighted. The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) foresees this initiative taking effect before the close of 2023.

A focal point of the SCID 2023 discussions revolved around three significant capital market measures recently introduced by the Prime Minister:

    1. Reducing Board Lot Size: Plans to lower the current board lot size for trading on Bursa Malaysia from 100 units to a more accessible level.
    2. Fractional Share Trading: Enabling investors to engage in fractional share trading through stockbrokers.
    3. Automatic Transfer for ACE Market Companies: Allowing qualifying companies listed on the ACE Market to transition automatically to the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia, contingent on specific criteria.

Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang Adek Hussin, the SC Chairman, underscored the importance of sustained collaboration with stakeholders. He emphasized that this collaboration will be instrumental in driving essential reforms and enhancements aimed at fortifying the vibrancy, inclusivity, and competitiveness of the Malaysian capital market.

The planned reduction of board lot size and introduction of fractional share trading on Bursa Malaysia is expected to broaden accessibility for a diverse array of investors, particularly retail and younger investors, facilitating their entry into the stock market and enabling the creation of well-balanced portfolios. This is also predicted to boost trading activity, liquidity, and engender an environment of greater dynamism in the market.

Efforts are being made to ensure that the reduction of the board lot size is carefully implemented, involving a collaborative approach with brokers to potentially revise the current minimum commission structure to accommodate the lowered board lot size.

Moreover, the SC is collaborating with securities brokers to introduce flexible fractional trading options, ultimately expanding retail investors’ engagement in the stock market. This move will be governed by a set of comprehensive principles that prioritize price transparency and equity.

Concerning the automatic transfer of ACE Market companies to the Main Market, discussions at the SCID 2023 centered on establishing meaningful criteria to ensure the sustainable performance of promoted companies and their alignment with ongoing Main Market requirements.

Dato’ Seri Dr. Awang highlighted that this transfer process is expected to offer increased visibility and access to a broader investor base for qualifying ACE Market companies. Additionally, a greater number of Main Market-listed companies with substantial market capitalization will present diversified investment prospects, particularly appealing to larger and foreign investors, thus enriching the Malaysian capital market.

To expedite these initiatives, the SC is diligently reviewing and discussing criteria and processes in collaboration with Bursa Malaysia, with forthcoming announcements projected as the framework is solidified. The objective is for the eligibility criteria for automatic transfers to be in place by the conclusion of 2023. Furthermore, the fundamental principles guiding fractional trading are anticipated to be disclosed by the close of Q3 this year.

The recent SCID 2023 event played a timely and pivotal role in facilitating the execution of these critical capital market measures. The dialogue not only offered a platform for implementation but also generated valuable insights and innovative ideas to further propel the development of the capital market.

The new plant is designed to meet the world’s growing needs for a more intelligent, efficient, and effective construction method.

CEO of SIBS Malaysia, SP Ong, said “Securing this project enables our company to strengthen its position as an industry leader in modular construction. We have a product that is unique and in high demand and I am confident that with a team of professionals whom we have assembled we will continue to improve to strengthen our position in this industry as the leader in construction tech. Everything in our factory is custom designed and built, from its production system to the machines used for production – something that no other competitor has. Not forgetting that we are one of the first to be able to complete 90% of an apartment building off-site leaving only 10% on-site work. We are also proud to be a company that prioritizes on using local suppliers and local professional talents. To further increase efficiency, we have also strategically placed our main suppliers within close proximities of our plant to avoid disruptions to our production. Doing so reduces our dependence on distant sources which are susceptible to disruptions and volatility. This mitigates risks and enhances our ability to respond quickly to demands and changing circumstances.

When we prioritize our borders, we directly boost our domestic economy. The ripple effects of this decision are profound, touching every corner of our society. Aside from delivering the best products, we have a serious commitment to contribute to local economic growth, job creations, and community development as an organization.” He concluded.

The success of SIBS in securing this multi-billion-ringgit apartment building project can be attributed to its experienced team of professionals who bring the substance of expertise and a passion for innovation to every project they undertake. Their dedication and commitment to excellence have earned the reputation for reliability in delivering high-quality products and ultimately positioning the company as the preferred choice in the construction technology industry.

SIBS is grateful for the support and trust of its partners, investors, suppliers, and the local

community. The company remains committed to delivering this ambitious project on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
